TITLE: The Issues With Social Media
Hi, my name is Daniel Berlinsky and I’m here to talk about what I believe to be one of the most important issues of our modern time, and that is the drastic shift social media has done to our society.
INTRO:

The Internet Age has completely revolutionized the way people live their lives. There is a drastic shift in people who witnessed the change in technology and those who have lived their whole life in its aftermath. However, although it may seem that the Internet has been around for a long time, in the larger scale 30-40 years is a miniscule amount.
The Internet is still in it’s preliminary stages. Unlike technologies and national systems that have been around for centuries, the guidelines and the information regarding the effects of the Internet are not as cemented. When cigarettes were invented, only after decades of doctor recommendations and advertisements was there a shift in discussion on health and limitations.
What this unfortunately means is that the generation that grew up with widespread access to the Internet are the guinea pigs for research on the do’s and don’t for Internet use. And while this is very unfortunate, we are responsible to analyze the data and establish regulations in the future.
In my previous assignment, the Op Ed, I discussed how the Internet and social media create misinformation for the general public to consume. This is done by prioritizing more clicks and watch time over credible information. I discussed how this affects people’s knowledge on their surroundings, but it also psychologically affects people’s mental health.
Because companies thrive off of people’s attention, the media that we consume has become centered on faster, flashier, ways to capture people’s attention. One of the newest forms of mainstream social media, Tiktok, has drastically lowered the average attention span as most videos on the app are a few seconds to a minute long.
One social media platform on its own would not be a threat, however Tiktok has redefined the ways social media and entertainment show content. Over the last few years, especially during the pandemic, Tiktok became one of the main forms of entertainment for teens, and others companies began to adapt the deadly yet successful Tiktok blueprint.
In late 2020, Instagram and Youtube introduced their own version of short videos, Reels and Shorts respectively. All of these videos are at most a minute long, and perform very well on the algorithm.
Although none of this is proven to be long term, most people can still force themselves to read a book or do a long task, when it comes to how we passively acquire information it has changed things drastically. There is little data to go off of in 2021 but, based off of previous data, attention spans will only decrease from here. The University of Denmark did a study in 2019 that showed that an average trending hashtag length decreased from 17.5 hours in 2013 to 11.9 in 2016. There are also studies showing that the average human attention span on the Internet has decreased to 8 seconds, less than that of a goldfish with 9 seconds. With how much shorter trending videos have become now, these numbers will unfortunately only decrease.
There are dangerous side effects that everyone should be aware of and there need to be regulations imposed on how people use/corporations manipulate the Internet.
Social media can be a form of therapy and relief for people. Especially during the pandemic when so many people can’t see their friends and families, it’s totally understandable why these apps appeal to people. And those apps can be entertaining and harmless if handled with limits, but those limits need to be enforced. Unfortunately, companies do not care about the health of their clients, as long as they keep watching their content and giving them money.
